People we met in the States 3

Ingrid,

who immigrated from Germany long ago, spoke to us in the library while we were writing e-mails. What we are doing here an where we wanted to stay were her first questions. Since we had a host at that time she offered us to have breakfast at her restaurant "blue room". There she prepared "Hoppel Poppel" for us. This is a bourgeois German farmer's breakfast. To return the favor Markus offered to prepare German pancakes the next morning. And so he got the honor to use her kitchen. It got a wonderful relaxed Sunday morning with a lot of Berlin stories, her former home. (ma)

Karen and Doyle

Actually we only wanted to look for our e-mails to find out, if we are allowed to volunteer at the SolFest in Hopland. So we asked Karen, who stood in front of a house, if she knows a library with Internet access. Immediately she offered us her computer in her house. She used to live in Mexico with Doyle and was here because his mother died and they wanted to look for her house. They invited us to their house in Mexico for the next winter, when they are back. So we got a lot of tips about Mexico that afternoon and even we had bicycled only 10 miles we didn't leave that day. (ma)

Birgit and Christian

we met in front of road works. We were not allowed to pass the area, where the road was washed down and rebuilt. The traffic was guided on one lane for some miles and we would have been a real challenge. So we had to wait for the truck which carried us all up the steep hill. For the mercantilist couple from Germany the holiday nearly has been finished. They bicycled in three weeks what we did in three months. (ma)

Lucia

I only knew Mendocino from a German song, which I heard often from my parents. So we were really surprised to see the city marker. In the artist's village we again had to look for a place to stay. An while we were looking around Lucia saw us and turned. She showed us a beautiful place near the cliff where we spent the night without our tent. After having a shower at Lucias home we had a wonderful night viewing the stars. The daughter of a Mendocino artist, who founded the local art school, showed us a lot of pictures from her father an other artists in her gallery. On a visit at her mother we saw the bunny with the longest fur we ever have seen. (ma)

Anna und Markus,

After leaving Hopland we wanted to follow a tip of a friend and camp overnight in a small park. Unfortunately we reached it short before sunset. When we had built up our iso mattresses and sleepingbags the park ranger found us and asked us friendly but irrevocable to leave. It was not allowed to stay! In the middle of the night we finally found some people who let us stay in the backyard of a church but really relaxed we haven't been the next morning. While we had a coffee for breakfast at Starbucks the manager asked us in German, if we were from Aschaffenburg. I wore the Aschaffenburg bicycling T-shirt at that moment. His uncle lives there and his parents immigrated 50 years ago. After a small talk he invited us for dinner. We played a long time with his children Gunnar and Ellie and had delicious steaks. So we could finally get there the missing relaxation. (ma)

John Francis

the "Planetwalker". In Point Reyes Station we met an extraordinary person. By chance we got a newspaper
report about a man, who walks around the world. More than 20 years ago John Francis started to walk for social change across America. Inspired by a collision of two oil tanker in the Bay of San Francisco and an unexpected death of a friend he decided not to use motorized vehicles. Not to argue with everybody about his reasons he started not to speak for one day. One day turned into one week, one month and finally into 17 years. In that time he earned a Bachelor degree, a Masters, a Ph.D. and taught in high schools. Now he is a famous specialist and gets invitations from all over the world. Europe he still didn't visit because he wanted to do it non motorized, which means by sail boat.
From the Newspaper I got the contact and so we met in Point Reyes Station. I was deeply impressed by the things he learned about the people not speaking to them. Also learning much about himself without arguing and speaking with other people was for me an unexpected experience. He made me thinking about my own behavior and it was a great honor to speak with him. (ma)

The website of the Planetwalker with a lot of 9information about his activities you can find at www.planetwalk.org.

Bill

is the land steward of Audubon Canyon Ranch North of San Francisco. It is an educational ranch for bringing nature to children. When we arrived all furniture stood on the lawn between the buildings. In one week school will begin and therefore Bill has to work on several things. He started moving things around to get space for the kids in the dining room. Us he let bring out two beds into the yard, where we slept (nearly undisturbed). Here we finally found a place to rest and work on our website again. Together with him we celebrated Labor Day in the near village. It is a quiet preparation for our next stage San Francisco. (ma)

Todd and Chris

Some weeks ago we met them on camping in the redwoods. Then we shared one campsite where you could place more than 50 tents in the middle of the forest. They invited us to their home in San Francisco and then we visited them for a weekend. The view from our room over the East of SF and the Bay was breathtaking. They gave us good tips to discover interesting parts of the city. And on Saturday night Chris indulged us together with two friends in a real gourmet dinner. (ma)

Torsten

we met the first time in Hopland at the SolFest. There he took a video documentation. He immigrated from Germany long ago and is now self employed as a video artist. And by chance we met him again in a cafe on Haight Street in San Francisco. He let us sleep in his home on top of the highest hill of San Francisco near the TV-Tower. There he gave us a good view of the relaxed Californian life style.
On his very interesting Website he shows a lot of his artistic work:

Mary and Joe

are friends of people we met weeks ago. With them we discovered some of the attractions of San Francisco. For example Fisherman's Wharf by night, the Giants Stadium and the former chocolate factory of Ghirardelly, which is now a nice place with stores, cafes and restaurants. And the wonderful and delicious dinner at a small Mexican restaurant in their neighborhood we will never forget. And their beagle Penny will never forget me. She really loved me and I liked her so much.(ma)
