People we met in Baja 2

Liselotte

is coming from Denmark, more precisely from Copenhagen and even more precisely from Christiania. That took my breath away! As teenager I have seen a picture book about the free state of Christiania. I doated so much on this community of hippies and idealists, who created their dream world in the 70th in the center of Copenhagen. And this Christiania does still exist. O yes, many things are receivet from then, Liselotte told me. She lives there since 10 years. And so she invited us to have a look at everything. Too bad, that Denmark is not close to Mexico! Antonio

we asked to help us with Markus' front-rack, which was broken since our gravel-road trip to San Francisco de la Sierra. He at once started to solder it and paint it afterwards. By chance they had no black color and so he took a friendly sky blue. Antonio, who works at a body shop for US-cars is enthusiastc bicyclist himself. Often in his freetime he takes his bike to work and climbs the hills around the area. By the way the repair he did completely for free. (mi)

Heber

has the nickname "Ole", because he is a great fan of bullfights. When he was young he even worked as bandillero in the arena. But then he considered to better bicycle and started to explore the entire Baja California and parts of the mainland of Mexico. His green colored house got a popular meeting point for bicyclists all over the world. Thank Heber our Spanish made a lot of progress. He provided a great insight to the diversity of Mexican food (see also "Lovely food/Mexico") - very delicious! Since summer 2003 Heber works on the build-up of a small hostel for cyclists, the "Refugio de ciclistas". If you also want to stay with him, feel free to contact him: heberole@hotmail.com. He will be glad to meet you. But he only speaks Spanish! (mi)

Israel

we met in the French-Mexican interpretive center in La Paz. He speaks Spanish, English, German, a little bit of Italian and will learn French soon. And that with 18 years! Thank him we could use the computer of the University one week for free to update our website. With him and his sister we went to cinema where we had the feeling of success to watch a US-movie with Spanish subtitles and we understood both. Who wants to contact Israel in one of the five languages can mail to: the_7th_passenger@hotmail.com (mi)

Bärbel of the University in La Paz

Israel (see above) got us across with Bärbel, the emigrated German, who teaches German at the university of La Paz and leads the faculty of foreign lenguages. She immediately invited us to give a class about our cycling stories. That turned out very funny because we had to explain a lot with gestures and scetches (it is the nature of bicycle scetches to be funny). But the students knew a lot German, what impressed us much. Even that Germany is so far away from Mexico and they probably will never get the chance to travel there. (mi)
