First days in Guatemala

Created in an internet cafe in Huehuetenango, Guatemala in May 2004

The farewell was so hard. It was so comfortable in San Cristobal de las Casas with Britta and Adrio. But the Visa run out of time and so we had to leave!

After a break of three weeks it was quiet exhausting to cycle again. Good to have all the nice zocalos with their park benches to rest for a while. (ma)

The first night after we left San Cristobal we camped close to a meadow. Breakfast at the fence (mi)

Attention! Cows from right! (mi)

Since we left San Cristobal we cycled again on the Panamaricana. And so we had to stay in the "Posada Panamaricana" in Comitan. For just 6 Euro it was not too expensive. (mi)

Greetings from Murphy: When we wanted to start through, the nice road infront of us, we got a puncture at first. But after half an hour we could start again.
Shortly after Comitan (mi)

Three pack animals and a farmer.
This man has good luck: he has not to carry his wood on his own. We saw many people, who carried nearly the same amount of wood on their back for miles. Poorness means not the same for everyone. (ma)

Even if its forbidden many Mexicans burn the land to get more space for fields or houses. Also the roadside is often "cleaned up" this way.
Shortly before we reached the border to Guatemala. (mi)

Even if it was very hot we wore our best clothes to carry weight at the custom officer. And so we got visa for 90 days without problems!
La Mesilla directly at the tallgate. (mi)

From that moment on it went uphill. We followed for 2 days this river but the grade was not that bad and the landscape beautiful. (ma)

Lunch on the zocalo of La Democracia. The shoeshine boys and the little girls were fascinated about the strange people preparing their lunch on a little gas stove. Nobody wanted to miss this event, so the adults got long necks too. (mi)

Such a good road we haven't had for a while. And what a luxury shoulder. A wonderful first day in Guatemala. (ma)

The first night in Guatemala we had lots of good luck! At dawn we arrived really tired at San Sebastian, which looked quiet big on the map. And so we expected a hotel. "No, we don't have anz hotel here" said Jorge to us. "But you could sleep at my house. Just by chance I have a free bed." After all the wooden huts we passed, his house looked like a luxury villa. No wonder, he is a talented craftsman and architect. The beautiful door to our guestroom also was made by him.
