Batterielight:

On my first big cycling trip I carried a MagLite driven by two D-Cells. It was very bright and lasts for very long but it weighs about 2 lb;-)
Than I changed to a Petzel Zoom. It was leighter and practicaller on the head. But it used a 4.5V-battery or three AA-cells and has its batteriebox on the backhead.
After 4 months I decided to buy the Petzel micro. It only needs 2 AA-cells in one housing. It was bright, focusable and uses less energy.
But also this light you can improve. I met Alex (see also "who we met/USA 4") and he built a lot of LED-lamps from normal flash lights. Together with him I made an replacement for the bulb running two yellow focused LEDs. White ones would not work in a simple circuit from two cells. But the yellow ones were absolute good enough for reading an searching things in the tent. And the need much less energy than the white ones!
We mounted two sockets with one 13 Ohm resistor in series inro the thred of an old bulb and fixed everything with epoxy glue.
Since some night I'm testing the light and it works pefekt.

Candle:

On my former trips I always carried an UCO candle light. Together with the reflector it produces enough pleasant light to read or write if fixed under the ceiling of the tent (without reflector it's definetly not enough). Unfortunately it is not suitable for warm countries. Already at 80-90F at sunny weather it gets so warm in the panniers that the wax gets soft. The spring pushes it through its cover out. Also I never got it fixed in the tent that nobody can touch it. Always some drops of wax splashed to the glastube. It got less transparent and was hardly to slide together.

Therefore we sent it back after 4 month of our trip.
